{"id":134,"date":"2011-03-20T21:41:23","date_gmt":"2011-03-21T01:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themanwholostchina.com\/?p=134"},"modified":"2012-10-01T21:09:36","modified_gmt":"2012-10-02T01:09:36","slug":"messing-with-texas-mccarthyism-or-mccarthy-ish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.themanwholostchina.com\/?p=134","title":{"rendered":"Messing With Texas: McCarthyism Or McCarthy-ish?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Which Hunt? <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-136\" title=\"mccarthywas right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.themanwholostchina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/mccarthywas-right.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"102\" height=\"140\" \/> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Months after the deed was done, establishment Republicans have discovered that Texas&#8217;s textbook commission made the state look foolish.<\/p>\n<p>Early last year the elected body&#8217;s majority of <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2010\/03\/creationist-cum-mccarthy-booster_rejected_by_texas_republicans.php\">dinosaur cavorting<\/a> flat earthers and plain old Republicans provided countless hours of entertainment. They drew up lists of textbook publishers Do&#8217;s &amp; Don&#8217;ts, banishing deist suspect Thomas Jefferson from the Founding Fathers while shoehorning Phyllis Schlafly into political science.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps most infamously, <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2010\/01\/the_rehabilitation_of_joseph_mccarthy_texas_textbo.php\">bringing back Joe McCarth<\/a>y.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Republican House Committee chairs are now shocked to discover all this is going on, vowing vaguely to do something about it. The <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.chron.com\/texaspolitics\/archives\/2011\/02\/who_supports_th.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+houstonchronicle%2Ftexaspolitics+%28Texas+Politics%29\">conservative<\/a> Fordham Institute found the Texas guidelines deficient, stirring the Public Education Chair Rob Eissler to a ringing expression of concern.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 90px;\">&#8220;<span style=\"font-family: arial, verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/news\/article\/GOP-leaders-endorse-new-history-curriculum-1144020.php\">When groups like the Fordham Institute call our standards \u00e2\u20ac\u02dca politicized distortion of history&#8217; and \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcan unwieldy tangle of social studies categories,&#8217; we have a problem<\/a>.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #474747; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Times, Verdana; line-height: 22px;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Fordham is probably right on the unwieldy tangle part, but when they get to McCarthy they distort the textbook mandate language in order to make the charge. Kind of like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/mccarthyism\">Old Joe<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Fordham said:<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 270px;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/conservative-think-tank-blasts-texas-blatant-politicizing-education\">&#8220;It is disingenuously<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/conservative-think-tank-blasts-texas-blatant-politicizing-education\">suggested that the House Un-American Activities<\/a><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 270px;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/conservative-think-tank-blasts-texas-blatant-politicizing-education\"> Committee\u00e2\u20ac\u201d<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/conservative-think-tank-blasts-texas-blatant-politicizing-education\">and, by extension, McCarthyism\u00e2\u20ac\u201dhave been vindicated <\/a><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 270px;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/conservative-think-tank-blasts-texas-blatant-politicizing-education\">by<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/conservative-think-tank-blasts-texas-blatant-politicizing-education\">the Venona decrypts of Soviet espionage activities (which<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/conservative-think-tank-blasts-texas-blatant-politicizing-education\">had, in <\/a><\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 270px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/content\/conservative-think-tank-blasts-texas-blatant-politicizing-education\"><em>reality, no link to McCarthy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s targets).&#8221;<\/em><\/a><\/div>\n<p>But Texas actually says this:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 240px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu.org\/blog\/racial-justice-religion-belief\/case-abuse-power-texas\"><em>&#8220;&#8230; describe how McCarthyism, the House Un-American Activities Committee<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 240px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu.org\/blog\/racial-justice-religion-belief\/case-abuse-power-texas\"><em>(HUAC), the arms race, and the space race increased Cold War tensions <span class=\"s1\">and<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"padding-left: 240px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu.org\/blog\/racial-justice-religion-belief\/case-abuse-power-texas\"><em>how the later release of the Venona Papers confirmed suspicions of<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"padding-left: 240px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu.org\/blog\/racial-justice-religion-belief\/case-abuse-power-texas\"><em>communist infiltration in U.S. government &#8220;<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;.which does not tie Venona <em>directl<\/em>y to HUAC or McCarthy. And McCarthy is obviously mentioned by name in the standard, while the Fordham reviewers for some reason pretend he&#8217;s only evoked by inference.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas commission has an at least defensible position: the Venona intercepts certainly cover a vast menagerie of federal employees who cozy with people provable as spies.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy Was Right cranks get in trouble when they wander into the claim that Venona vindicated McCarthy, which is a crock. Cranks almost always do, and at least one commission member <a href=\"http:\/\/tfninsider.org\/2009\/10\/21\/more-mcleroy-malarkey-part-1\/\">wanted to<\/a>. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-137\" title=\"McLeroy-McCarthy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.themanwholostchina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/McLeroy-McCarthy.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"109\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.themanwholostchina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/McLeroy-McCarthy.jpeg 500w, http:\/\/www.themanwholostchina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/McLeroy-McCarthy-300x65.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But Texas stopped short.<\/p>\n<p>Why we may never know. Maybe they meant to go all the way and the wording got muddled in the chaotic horse trading which produced the standards.<\/p>\n<p>So now we have apparent unhappyness over textbooks on the part of some Republican leaders, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/disp\/story.mpl\/metropolitan\/7479205.html\">giving wing to the disgruntled many<\/a> unhappy with the adopted standards.<\/p>\n<p>But given the glacial pace and murky expressions of concern they shouldn&#8217;t get their hopes up.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Which Hunt?
